2014 FIELDS-Perimeter Insititute – PostDoc Fellowship

The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences and Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics invite applications for a one-year joint postdoctoral fellowship. This fellowship is a unique position offered to new and recent PhDs who are African Nationals working in the areas of mathematical sciences or fundamental theoretical physics. It is intended to support the careers of young researchers who have a commitment to advance science in Africa.

Perimeter’s areas of strength include classical gravity, condensed matter theory, cosmology, particle physics, quantum fields and strings, quantum foundations, quantum information, and quantum gravity. The Fields Institute supports research in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and computer science, as well as collaboration between mathematicians and those applying mathematics in areas such as engineering, the physical and biological sciences, medicine, and economics and finance. While research interests for the selected fellow may dictate either Perimeter or Fields as a home institute, they will be encouraged to spend time at both institutes.

We welcome candidates to apply before March 15, 2014, however applications will be considered until this position is filled.  The current Fields-Perimeter Africa postdoc is Dine Ousmane Samary; an article on Dr. Samary and his research can be found here.

Perimeter Institute is located west of Toronto, in Waterloo, Canada, and was founded in September 1999 as an independent institute supporting research in foundational areas of theoretical physics. The Institute offers an exceptional research environment and is currently staffed with 34 full-time and part-time faculty members, 36 Distinguished Visiting Research Chairs, 46 Postdoctoral Researchers, 54 PhD students, and 31 students participating in Perimeter Scholars International, our master’s program; in addition, Perimeter hosts hundreds of visitors and conference participants throughout the academic year. For more information please visit the website at perimeterinstitute.ca.

The Fields Institute is a centre for research and training in all areas of the mathematical sciences. The Institute provides a uniquely supportive and stimulating environment for research, innovation, and education. Its primary activities are Thematic Programs, of one to six months in length, hosting around 600 participants each year, including 80 long-term visitors and 12 to 16 Postdoctoral Researches. In addition, Fields supports a wide range of shorter activities such as workshops and conferences, mini-courses, summer schools, seminar series, as well as lecture series and other outreach activities. Fields is located in the heart of Toronto, in a building designed for mathematical communication. For more information please visit the website at www.fields.utoronto.ca.

Applicants should submit a covering letter, curriculum vitae, and a description of their research interests, and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent on their behalf. Applications can be made through Perimeter Institute’s online application system or through MathJobs.org. The covering letter should include a statement about the candidate’s interest in specific research programs at Fields or Perimeter, as well as names of faculty members at Fields, Perimeter, or Ontario universities with whom the candidate may be interested in working.
