Growing Grassroots: Changing Cities in a Changing Climate

Green areas in cities are often called the “lungs of a city”. They are good for the air, for the climate and bring about a better quality of life to the city’s population. Do you like sitting in green areas or have you even thought about starting your own green project in your urban surrounding? Would you like to learn something about the opportunities of growing plants in urban spaces?
We want to invite you to our Egyptian-German exchange program “Growing GRASSroots: Changing Cities in a Changing Climate. Towards Greener Cities in Egypt and Germany”. With 40 participants, 20 from Germany and 20 from Egypt, we are going to meet at the end of August in Berlin and early October in Cairo to share our knowledge, experiences and excitement about environmental issues. We want to address urban gardening and topics related to that: urban development, climate change and participation possibilities. And we want YOU to be part of this experience that brings Egyptian and German young people together. Together we will explore each other’s country and culture – as we believe mutual cultural understanding and open-mindedness is the foundation of a successful partnership to push environmental efforts forward.
We will learn, we will laugh, we will connect – and we will grow grassroots movements in close collaboration with activists and organizations to strengthen the ties between our countries.
BUNDjugend Berlin (Young Friends of the Earth Berlin) will cooperate with the experts in terms of climate action and sustainability in Egypt: AYCM (Arab Youth Climate Movement Egypt) and icealex, which are both experienced in training changemakers.
If you are…
- Passionate about the world’s future
- Interested in environmentally friendly behaviour
- Keen to learn more about implementing your ideas for changing the world
- A resident or national of either Egypt or Germany (preferably Berlin)
- Between 18-26 years old
- Free from the 21.-31. of August (Berlin) and for two weeks during October (Cairo/Alexandria)
- Ready to participate and fully commit for this period of time
- Excited to join in on this amazing experience

The exchange is funded through Erasmus+, therefore board and lodging, flights, and visa fees are covered for. A co-payment in form of a participation fee of 3500 LE will cover further expenses, 500 LE will be refunded back to participants after the program to ensure commitment. The programme includes training sessions on campaign and action planning and the basics of urban gardening and sustainability. You will be given immediate contact with environmental activists and explore and discuss the topics together with them.

Towards Greener Cities in Egypt and Germany”. البرنامج ده هيجمع بين 20 مصري(ة) و20 ألماني(ة) عشان نتشارك معلوماتنا وخبراتنا وحماسنا للقضايا البيئية. البرنامج هيكون في آخر أغسطس فى برلين وفي أول أكتوبر فى مصر.
هنتكلم عن تغير المناخ وأسبابه وآثاره، وعن الزراعة والتشجير في المدينة وهنتكلم عن العلاقة بينهم، وإزاى نقدر نشارك عمليا فى حل مشكلة تغير المناخ من خلال التشجير.
إنضموا لنا فى التبادل التقافي بين الشباب المصري والألماني – وتعالوا قابلوا ناس مؤمنة بأهمية القضية بيئية.
هنتعلم وهنضحك سوا وهنقرب من بعض، ونغرس أسس ثقافة التشجير فى نفسنا وفي مجتمعنا من خلال التعاون مع بعض فى ورشة العمل، ومن خلال تعاملنا مع خبراء ومنظمات شغالة فى المجال ده وعندها خبرة سابقة فى تدريب ومساعدة الشباب اللى عايزة تعمل تغيير ايجايى.

x لو أنت:
– مهتم بالمستقبل وعايز تاخد خطوة ايجابية لحل المشاكل البيئية.
– متحمس للممارسات الصديقة للبيئة.
– عندك أفكار عن ازاى تخلى العالم مكان أفضل، ونفسك تتعلم تطبقها إزاي و تطورها.
– لو ساكن في أو مواطن مصري أو ألماني.
– عمرك بين 18 و 26 سنة.
– وقتك متاح تماما من 21 ل 31 أغسطس (برلين)
و
متاح تماما بلا استثناء لمدة أسبوعين فى أكتوبر(مصر).
– مستعد للالتزام والمشاركة الكلية فى الفترة السابق ذكرها.
– متشوق للانضمام فى التجربة المميزة دى.
يبقى احنا كمان متحمسين نشوفك ومستنيين طلبك للتقديم.
x التكاليف:
البرنامج ممول من منظمة ارازموس وشاملة تذاكر الطيران والاقامة ومصاريف التأشيرة.
فيه مصاريف مشاركة قيمتها بالتحديد 3000 جنيه مصري، و 500 جنيه مصري لضمان الإلتزام حترجع للمشاركين بعد مدة البرنامج.
البرنامج هيشمل ورش عمل ودورات تدريبية عن اقامة حملات توعية وعن التخطيط لأسس التشجير المدنى. وحتجيلك الفرصة انك تتعامل وتتشاور مع خبراء فى المجالات دى.
